Fatal Highway 81 crash victim identified

Authorities release the name of a man killed in a car accident on Highway 81 on Thursday morning.

Rock County Coroner Lou Smit says the primary cause of death for 28-year-old Max J. Merlet of Beloit was blunt force trauma to the head and torso.

The Rock County Sheriff's Office responded to the single-vehicle accident a little after 7:00 a.m. Thursday morning on Highway 81 near South Olson Road.

Merlet was traveling west in his pick-up truck when he hit the gravel shoulder, overcorrected, entered the ditch, and rolled the vehicle.  He was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the truck during the accident.

Wet pavement may have been a contributing factor to the accident.
