The School District of Janesville will participate in a Great Lakes State celebration promoting local farmers and growers on National Food Day. Sponsored by USDA and the Wisconsin Department of Trade and Consumer Protection, The Great Apple Crunch is a part of the National Farm to School Month celebration taking place across the country. The local celebration will be held, Thursday, October 22, 2015 from 11:15am to 12:00pm at Marshall Middle School. The School District of Janesville will be joined by Special Guest, Teyanna Loether, 2015 Alice in Dairyland.

Over 125,000 school children from 370 schools in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio will “crunch” a bite of an apple together. Local Wisconsin apples will be used for the School District’s participation. Jim Degan, Food Service Director states that “Educating children about where and how their food is grown is a huge step in preparing them for future success. We are fortunate to have local products grown and accessible for us to serve our children in Janesville.”

The Great Apple Crunch highlights the local success of a thriving national farm to school movement. In 2010, Congress declared October National Farm to School Month, recognizing the important role farm to school programs play in promoting well-being among children and strong local economies.
