Many residents in the Milton area are mourning the loss of former Police Chief Terry Hawkins. The long time city resident was killed in a traffic accident on Interstate 39/90 Thursday evening. Current Milton Police Chief Daniel Layber reports Hawkins was caught in traffic congestions in the west bound lane near Avalon Road about 10:30 p.m. when his vehicle was struck from behind by a semi-tractor/trailer. Hawkins was pronounced dead at the scene. Hawkins was Police Chief in Milton from 1990 to 2004, when he retired from law enforcement. Current city administrator and former police chief Jerry Schuetz remembers Hawkins as a humble man dedicated to the community. His wife, son, and daughter-in-law still live in the community. The vehicles involved in the mishap have been impounded and the State Patrol is investigating the crash. Milton's mayor has ordered flags be flown at half-staff through the weekend.
