Rock County Sheriff's Office kicks off Cops and Bobbers
The Rock County Sheriff's Office hopes some positive contact with law enforcement will go a long way for local kids.
Sheriff Spoden is pleased to announce, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office has received a grant award from the Cops and Kids Foundation. The Cops and Kids Foundation is an area nonprofit organization, whose programs and services provide law enforcement with the tools and funding necessary to implement award winning community service.
This grant award of $1,000 will be used to support the Rock County Cops and Bobbers fishing program. Various fishing supplies, boat rental, and other related materials will be purchased with the funds. Additionally, the Cops and Kids Foundation will be providing fishing poles, life jackets, and event t-shirts.
Sheriff Spoden says that the primary goal of the Cops and Bobbers program is to teach kids how to fish. The cops are the hosts and volunteers from the community are encouraged to assist. A secondary goal is to hook kids on fishing rather than drugs and crime. Kids can interact with cops to form positive and friendly relationships, as well as learn to appreciate the lakes and rivers in Rock County.
This year, two Cops and Bobbers events will be held in Rock County. Each event will allow 20 kids ages 7 and older, the chance to participate. Parents or guardians of kids interested in participating should submit a letter including their child’s name, age, address, and phone number to Sheriff Spoden at 200 E Hwy 14, Janesville WI, 53545. These names will be placed on a list and the parent/guardian will be contacted once the event dates, times, and locations have been selected.
This Cops and Kids Foundation grant is renewable for up to three years, but the Sheriff’s Office must show clear evidence of the program remaining self-sufficient beyond that point. Therefore, any individuals or businesses interested in donating to the Cops and Bobbers event may do so at any time. The business name for all business sponsors will be identified on the back of the event t-shirts.
The Sheriff’s Office is currently in the process of coordinating dates and times for the two fishing events. A future press release will provide information on event dates and times.
