Canoeist takes chance on flooded river
A close call for a canoeist on the Rock River in Janesville.
Fire Chief Larry Grorud says the call came in around 9:00 Monday night. Grorud says the river had been closed because of the dangerous current. The worry was the canoeist would go over Monterey Dam. The fire department deployed south of Memorial Bridge.
The canoeist was able to battle back to shore.

Boaters of every kind go by my house on the Rock river every couple of days. I tried to do the right thing by calling the Sheriff Dept. but an hour later, well they were gone and I was made to feel like I was being a bother. I gave up, on the up side, well, there is a chance the gene pool may be stronger.

@ doc0430, Not if he dropped the canoe in at or around Dawson field. The story doesn't say where the canoeist put in at. Plus you forgot the rail bridge (Bike Trail) East of Jackson.
@ Purrmaid, I cannot disagree with you. Dude is a marooooooon. And I believe that anytime the fire department (which always includes a tag along ambulance) is called and arrives at a scene, the address or owner of property gets a nice little bill for the service. I believe this idiot will as well. But what about other public services that were deployed, Police and/ or Sheriff department? Will he be billed for their services as well? Probably not but should.

As Bugs Bunny would say, "What a maroooon."
The fool in the canoe should also be billed for every dime it took to "deploy the fire deparment."

I would say a trip to the Rock County Health Care Center would be a good place for this man to visit.

I am tired of all these people around southern wisconsin risking the lives of rescue workers. We aren't here to save you from stupidity. There are people that truly need help and aren't putting themselves into danger. Stay out of the water. And if you go in, bring your own lifesaver. None of us should have to come in and save you!!!!

There was a similar story from Ozaukee county on Sunday where a family with children as young as 7 in 4 canoes were rescued as they held on to vegetation from a flooded island in the Milwaukee river after being warned not to enter the water.

wouldn't he have had to go over the centerway dam before he would have gotten to the Monterey dam? Not to mention how was he going to get under the bridges at Centerway, Milwaukee, Court, Racine, and Jackson before getting to the Monterey dam? Just wondering....
