Wednesday is NOAA Weather Radio Awareness Day
Governor Jim Doyle declares Wednesday as the statewide NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards Awareness Day.
Rock County Emergency Management Coordinator Shirley Connors says the radios can be useful for babysitters and caregivers to make sure they reach cover in case of a tornado. She says weather radios can also warn of Amber Alerts, chemical spills and evacuations in addition to the standard storm alerts.
Connors says residents shouldn't just rely on the outdoor tornado sirens in the county, because sometimes those aren't audible inside. Weather radios can also be programmed to give more advanced notice of a severe storm than the outdoor sirens.
