Sheridan: presidential candidates' car choices matter

A local lawmaker says it is important for voters to know whether the presidential candidates buy American-made vehicles.

Representative Mike Sheridan of Janesville, former president of UAW Local 95, says John McCain wasn't being completely honest when he's said he has bought American all his life since his fleet of 13 vehicles includes several foreign cars. Barack Obama owns one car: a Ford hybrid.

Sheridan is a shill for the UAW. THe UAW wants its members to vote lock step with democrate candidates. Just follow the UAW PAC oney.

Sheridan and others had a chance to ask Senator Obama about his choice for punitive CAFE standards and other choices that hurt the US auto industry-especially an aged Janesville facility. How effective will local UAW be in 2010 when there is no industry in Janesville? What guarantees can the UAW provide to a non-existant work force? Zero.

Those that work the line look just like America-40% democrats and 40% Republicans. 20% lean left or right, but 99% of the UAW money goes to the left as it has for decades? What has the return on that investment been?
Barack Obama thanks you for your support. I hope those dues paying UAW members believe their forced dues hep support politicians who destroy their way of life.

The UAW gets what it pays for, right Mike?

Now that's a big deal how many cars a candidate has. Come on.

I've been driving since 1974. There really weren't any foreign cars that a young adult could afford to buy, so "made in the good old USA" is what we drove. The slogan for Fords was Fix Or Repair Daily... and we DID. But at least in those days, the local High Schools taught auto mechanics classes and all our boyfriends could take a car apart with minimal parts leftover!

Nowadays, Unless you're changing the spark plugs/air filter/oil... you need a qualified mechanic. So what would YOU want to spend your money on... a vehicle that WILL need repairs or one that doesn't?

I bought my first Honda in 2001.. 2 years old. That car now has 195,ooo plus miles on it, and has NEVER had an issue. My husband just bought a 2 year old Toyota for me for my birthday, a Camry Solara SLE convertible, and I love it!

Sorry, but the American made cars are inferior as far as I'm concerned. When we make a better product, I'll buy one.

Also... just a note, a gal who's children went to school with my kids, worked at GM about 10 years ago... She said when they had a line go down, or were switching lines over in the summer, she stocked up on novels and clocked in everyday... making $26,00 an hour, to read. Wow, must be nice to have a union who wants someone paid to do absolutely NOTHING.

As far as the candidates vehicles, who gives a darn, will it make them a better leader if they drive a GM vehicle?
Whatever... I'm sick of the GM local whining.

Hannah remains stuck with his outmoded perceptions. Competition has created an environment where buyers will get a quality vehicle regardless of where it is built. When he slams our products he ignores statistics showing Toyota having more recalls the last several years than GM and Ford combined. You need to get past prejudice and be proud to purchase a vehicle made in America and providing profits to America,

sorry hockey jockey THOSE ARE THE FACTS AND I AM SMART ENOUGH to read them. It is also my job to know these facts.
and rich. i am not being anti anything. just making statements. I dont drive a forgien car cause I dont bit the hand that feeds me and the brand i work for builds a good car and is supirior to chevy and ford. i do understand we should buy american but until the quality improves ALL people will not. and now that toyota has plants here that will not help the situation either of people trying to buy american branded cars.

Hannah exhibits the same kind of anti US worker mentality as Mike Sheridan's elitist Madison friends. As Obama says - we pro American product folks are probably just taking refuge in our religion, our guns, and our Chevys? Hannah fails to realize that we are all in it together - worker, farmer, businessman etc. Profits sent overseas will do little to benefit America. Pehaps it does take a village as Hillary would say. Make no mistake Mike Sheridan's comments are right up there with his threat to "put a hurt on Woodmans) and his statement that the President of the United States wasn't welcome in Janesville. Mr Sheridan needs to temper his comments and start working for us all.

janesvillecomments - you should have refered to Mike as the "previous double-dipper".

moralitypolice - he did double-dip for a couple of years. That makes him a double-dipper.

In response to gocrew: Very few GM workers drive foreign and I make no excuse for any who do. There has been a lot of outsourcing and some may be those workers. Please don't judge 99% by the actions of 1%. My problem is with our union leadership which seems to take political sides with those who have an underlying contempt for us.

Why does it matter? Whomever wins the election won't be allowed to drive a car for the next four years anyway.

The last time I drove by the plant, in my Canadian built GM vehichle, I noticed quite a few cars that are made overseas. Why is that?
Why worry about what Obama and McCain drive when you can't even get your own brothers and sisters to drive American made vehichles.

The dirty little secret is that the UAW has always cast its lot with liberals who scorn American workers and American products. Mike Sheridan and company place more value on their political friends than with working people like me.

"janesvillecomments" - maybe you missed it, but Mike isn't "double-dipping." He retired from his position at UAW in June. Get over it.

A nice little dig from Mike "double-dipper" Sheridan. The McCain "fleet", with the exception of a 2004 Cadillac CTS (made in Lansing) and an old Jeep, belong to his wife Cindy, or one of her companies.

The Obamas supposedly own only one vehicle, a 2008 Ford Escape hybrid. I wonder what they were driving before that and if they sold off one or more politcally incorrect vehicles in the last couple of years? How about some followup research, Gazette?
.
Michelle Obama was using a "company" (campaign) van when it had an accident with a motorcycle last October.

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail...

I wonder if the Democrats could possibly be worried about losing in Michigan? Could enough laid off auto workers realize that being in bed with the Democratic Party isn't going to save their unions? Will they realize that with the Democratic party can't pressure foreign factories into providing Americans with high-paying jobs or lavish pensions?
