Teen pregnancies are up in the Beloit School District
Podcast Episode
WCLO's Steve Benton reports on Beloit School District teen pregnancy numbers
BELOIT The number of teen pregnancies for students in the Beloit School District spiked at 52 last year, which has administrators concerned.
Director of Student Services, Chris Wesling, says there are already 35 pregnancies this school year and according to information from the Rock County Health Department, the number of sexually transmitted infections is also up in the county and Beloit leads the statistics.
Although there are a number of factors involved, including family attitudes about sex, Wesling says you can see the jump from 18 pregnancies in the 2003-04 school year to 37 the following year linked to the school board's decision to drop the comprehensive human growth and development unit of the curriculum. Board members couldn't decide whether abstinence, or a combination of abstinence and prevention should be taught, so they just dropped it.

KITA..I agree. Race doesn't have anything to do with the jest of it. But I understand what the poster was trying to get at. HE/SHE was trying to determine things from a statistic stand point, or so I think . It seems everything in society is statistically researched on race. I think it is just an easier way to break down a very over populated earth. But in reality, yellow, purple, pink and blue people can all live in the ghetto or the mansion on the hill. It just depends on how the family system operates, not on what color the skin is. It's too bad that people don't get that. It is just like they determine things by income brackets as well.

tsk tsk tsk! As a mom that started out at the YOUNG age of 19, I must say, you kids really messed up. Granted, I obviously would NEVER give up my children, but to do it all over again, (and know I would have my SAME boy), I would absolutely wait until I was in an adult and responsible enough to be having sex. If our kids would just listen and believe us when we say we know what we are talking about. I know, that is in an ideal world, because we never thought our parents knew anything either....but seriously kids, your parents REALLY do have a CLUE. I promise. Yes, sex is very enticing, but, please until you are at least bringing home 20k a year, keep it together.

Hold up race does not have anything to do with why the percentage of pregnancies in high schools are going up. All teenagers of all races are getting pregnant everyday. Yes the education should start at home about sex. But teenagers are going to do what the hell they want to do regardless of how many times their parents talk to them about sex and the risks of having sex because they think they are grown and don't have to listen to nobody. Parents can only talk to their children about sex and risks that comes along with it. And hope they will listen and make good decisions about it. Obviously these teenagers did not listen and made the wrong choices. Plain and simple.

I would like to know what the % of teen pregnancies are White and what percent are black or latino,I think then the people of those groups need to step up and try and help teach these kids the importance of abstenence and if not the importance of safe sex. I think this starts at home with how your kids are raised, and I believe there has to be a problem with the Schools and how they are getting across to these kids in there teaching or lack of.

That's just the kind of dumb decision making that has been going on by that school board for some time now. Sure hope that community knows who to vote out to get their school system back of the right path.

I guess tthat "don't talk about it and they won't have sex" theory backfired a bit.
