Janesville man to stand trial for alleged sexual assault

JANESVILLE — A Janesville man accused of sexually assaulting a homeless woman will face trial after his preliminary hearing Monday in Rock County Court.
William R. McKinney, 40, of 7 N. Academy St., No. 12, faces a felony charge of first-degree sexual assault. Court Commissioner Stephen Meyer bound McKinney over for trial, setting his arraignment for Sept. 14.
According to the criminal complaint, an 18-year-old homeless Janesville woman told police she was sexually assaulted July 19 when she was looking for a place to stay.
The woman testified in court Monday, explaining how she followed McKinney up to his apartment because she was thirsty and McKinney said he would give her some water.
“He started to tear my clothes off,” the woman testified. She said McKinney left after sexually assaulting her. She said he later confronted her at knifepoint outside before she went to the police department.
Defense attorney Michael Haakenson argued McKinney should be released on a signature bond because he doesn’t have the resources to post the $30,000 bond, but Meyer disagreed and held the bond.
