Council votes to hire ice arena consultant
The Janesville City Council voted Monday to spend no more than $10,000 on consultants to study the needs of a new ice arena. Several council members said it would be a good investment before potentially spending millions on a new arena.
The council also voted to extend a private group's fundraising deadline for the project. The group will be able to review the consultants' findings before proceeding with the fundraising. Nearly $690,000 has been raised by private donations, but $1.5 million was needed by the March 1 deadline if the city was expected to contribute $2.5 million to the project.

This is playing out in the media and I'm wondering who has the job to step in and stop this nonsense? It has gotten out of hand and yet it continues to go on right in front of our eyes. There has been public out cry and numerous polls done that Janesville residents DO NOT want this ice arena to begin with. We live in a democratic society, where majority rules, majority said "NO", Janesville cannot afford it. And we are still hiring a consultant? Now the hockey club wants to own and manage it. I think that is a great idea. So, with that being the case, just like any other business that is owned, they can pay for it and foot the bill and all the operational expenses and leave the city and the tax payers out of this mess.

I thought this was a done deal. Apparently, the Youth Hockey did not make the deadline for their contributions and also decided that the location that was approved might have been made in haste. Then the council suggested that we (City of Janesville) just give them (Youth Hockey) a 2 million dollar check and be done with it. Now we are hiring a 10K consultant. Look around your City, houses for sale, many foreclosed. I do know that having programs for our youth is important, but what about reuse and recycle? Hey, I know, can the City Council give $250 to the "chicken people" so we can get the Mad City Chicken Documentary to have a showing in Janesville? The youth of Janesville could keep a few backyard hens and join 4-H!
