New state law regulates household electronics

A new state law is changing the way consumers get rid of unwanted electronics.

Janesville Operations Director John Whitcomb says consumer electronics from businesses had already been banned but the new state law covers electronics generated by a household. The devices may contain hazardous materials, which is why the state wants to keep them out of the landfills.

Consumers should be able to take the electronics to retailers that sell similar products for recycling.

Consumers may take their electronics to retailers for recycling. Otherwise, for a $5 fee, students in the environmental clubs at Beloit Memorial High School and Beloit Turner High School are holding an electronics drive on Saturday at the Eclipse Center.
