WCLO's Steve Benton reports the number of traffic crashes in 2009 in Rock County are down over the previous year

— Good news on the state and county level regarding traffic accidents.

Statistics from the Department of Transportation show the state ended 2009 with the lowest number of traffic deaths since 1944.

Rock County Sheriff's Office, Capt. Gary Groelle says the county is mirroring that trend. The number of accidents in the county dropped by 300 from 2008 to a total of 678 in 2009. Fatal accidents in the county fell from 12 in 2008 to eight in 2009.

Groelle says it's hard to pinpoint the factors contributing to the lower statistics, but the increased awareness of enforcement efforts probably helped.
