Beloit Police say they've arrested the mother of a toddler reportedly injured by a ten-year-old babysitter.

Captain Bill Tyler says investigators arrested 21-year-old Stephanie Schober of Beloit on a charge of child neglect. The arrest was made in conjunction with the Rock County District Attorney's Office. Schober will appear in Rock County Court August 10.

-----

A ten-year-old babysitter accused of abusing a toddler appeared in Rock County Court Friday.

The ten-year-old remains in custody in the non-secure section of the Rock County Juvenile Detention Center. According to the criminal complaint, the Beloit girl is accused of giving the toddler an abusive head injury, caused by shaking or slamming. A doctor says the injuries to the toddler, which include bruises nearly covering her body, are similar to those caused when a child is hit by a car. When interviewed by police, the ten-year-old said she grabbed the toddler by the hair and pulled her out of her crib. She also told police she hit the toddler with toys, a bat and a belt. The criminal complaint states the babysitter also picked up the toddler and threw her into a bathtub. A judge has ordered a competency hearing for the girl.

Prosecutors note that it would be a felony offense if the juvenile was an adult.

Has anyone heard how the little girl is doing? I missed it if they had updates in the paper...

This is the society we've created for our children. Throw them in jail no matter how old they are. And we call Shiria law barbaric! We need to look in our own back yard for a bit!

And yes. what she did to this baby deserves some HELP, not incarceration!

I still cannt get my arms around this whole story...we obviously have a troubled 10 year old but who in their right mind puts a 10 year old in this situation...I do not believe encarserating a 10 year old is the correct method of treatment for this troubled CHILD. I do think that whomever the parent that(the 10 year olds as well as the mother that hired her) put this very young child in the charge of a baby(both) need to be punished both the mother and father of the 10 year old and the babies parents...it was their responsibility to keep both children from harm and this just sickens me on both sides of the issue

This horror is the product of our society. I would suspect the young babysitter had some of the same treatment she gave the child. Clearly the Mother showed Poor Judgement, and the young child suffers. Past Behavior...Future Performance...Keep doing what your doing and you'll keep getting what your getting...
I am sure there are some dynamic's to this that would us gasp if we only knew...

not to condone anything but lock up the idiot mother...then we have 2 screwed up kids in the court system....I would put a couple bracelettes on the momma and that will keep her home where she should have been to begin with....what an idiot...anyone can have a kid, but you have to licence your dog...go figure

"you wouldn't punish the hot car". That's an ignorant comment and a dumb excuse. The 10 year old child is old enough to know right from wrong, a car doesn't. The ten year old DOES deserve to be held responsible as well as HER parents AND the victims mother.

The ten year old should be held responsible to an extent, but also, maybe the police should check the ten year olds parents as well? Usually abuse is learned from somebody. Either way, the mother of the two year old should have never left her daughter with a ten year old. When I was ten years old my mom was still leaving me with a babysitter. There's no way I could've cared for other little kids at that age.

About time they arrested her. Irresponsible parenting resulted in the critical injuries to the toddler. I say the punishment for both should be the same as what the 10 yr inflicted on that helpless baby.

This is about the equivalent of leaving the child in a hot car...The hot car wouldn't be punished for abuse would it??....same with the 10 year-old...The "mother" is SOLELY responsible and guilty of this violence to the victim.

That 10 year old little girl is no more responsible than the 2 year old. She is a troubled, abused child in her own right. She needs HELP NOT punishment. As it is she is locked up with other kids much older than she is and is probably scared out of her wits. That baby's mother needs to pay a high price and possibly the loss of her child to a family who will love her and give her a good life.

Honestly I cant help but think about how it feels to accidentally hurt a child. I have accidentally stepped on some fingers and bumped into my kids causing them to bump their head ect, there have been tears at my expense. I cant imagine hurting a child on purpose, over and over and over and feeling NO remorse.

Was this child so frustrated she had to pull the little one by the hair, hit her and throw her? No one was around to see or hear this? What a crying shame. This 10 year old has some very serious issues, if not addressed now, they will probably kill someone before they are a teenager. I hope to God that the little one is okay. The parent should be strung up and beat just like the baby was. JMO

This 10 year old needs serious help. Children are just so innocent. They can be frustrating, but there is never a good reason to hit a toddler.A child, almost anyone most of the time. This girl sounds like she has some serious, deep-seeded anger issues.
My son is 3, 2 wasn't that long ago. To even think about harming a child is incomprehensible. The look my son would give me when he'd take a spill by tripping on something can be enough to melt me in my place. The innocent, puzzled hurt look, the little cry.It strikes me inside in a way I can't even explain. How anyone could purposely do this, "throw her into the bathtub", brings me on the edge of tears, and I'm a grown man. They are so innocent, and capable of such love, how could anyone possibly do this?My prayers go out for the little girl, I hope she heals physically, and especially emotionally. This is a traumatic event for anyone, let alone a 2 year old.Wow. Just, wow. I am logging off, and I need to sit in the rocker and watch my son sleep for a few minutes, to reassure myself he is ok, to hope this little girl will be too.

Poor baby, I hope she gets well and is able to have a normal life. Her mother needs to go to jail tho. What kind of mom leaves her baby with a 10 year old.

My heart goes out to the poor little 2 year old. How can there be so much evil in this world? The mother should have never left this child in the custody of a 10 year old. I pray this child recovers quickly and the mother does the right thing and gives this child a chance to grow up in a loving family. Children are a gift this mother should have never recieved. Please Judge, don't let this 10 year old off with a slap on the wrist. She needs to be punished.

Let's all say a prayer for the little 2 year old.

TJ... wow! I missed where the mother was, while her child was being beaten!

This is just my opinion, but I don't believe this young woman is a fit parent! I hope the court takes this child away permanently. As I've said before, if a child is injured the parent should lose any right to that child.

Reported on Channel 3000 - The 10 year old has mental issues and is a relative of the 2 year old victim. The mother of the victim allowed the 10 year old to babysit while she went out with a friend.

The news on ch 15 just mentioned that this 10 year old has been involved with counseling in the past. I think this 10 year old CHILD, has some serious issues. She needs to be closely guarded and supervised, while they decide what to do with her. This is so sad... my grand daughter will be 10 in just a few months... I can't even imagine her being CAPABLE of doing such harm! She should have called family (or someone) for help, if she was struggling.

That said, this VERY young mother MUST be held accountable for neglect and perhaps other charges will apply.

My prayers are for this little baby girl... she will have a long road to recovery. I hope a good family can care for her while she struggles for normalcy. NO ONE should be battered like this, but when it is such a young child... its heartbreaking!

We need to be very careful about villanizing the 10 year old....maybe that is the way she is has been treated?

This mother should be arrested. You don't leave your 2 year old child with a 10 year old. You can't start babysitting classes until you are 12. A 10 year old is not capable of taking care of a toddler.
