— Rock County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating who is responsible for damaging a heavy metal security screen in a cell in C-Unit at the Rock County Jail.

Correctional staff discovered the damage at about 10:15 a.m. Thursday on a routine security check, according to a sheriff’s office news release. The unit where the damage was discovered houses the disciplinary segregation unit of the jail.

According to the news release:

After the damage was discovered, the inmate in the cell was removed. Staff determined a metal security shelf also had been pried from the wall, though the shelf had been put back in place when the damage was discovered.

Officials believe the shelf was used to damage the security screen.

After the damage was discovered, the facility was placed in lockdown and a security inspection and shakedown for contraband was conducted.

At no time was the security of the jail compromised or breached. Investigators believe the damage was not a result of an escape attempt.

The sheriff’s office detective bureau is investigating to determine who is responsible and why the damage was caused. An administrative review also is being conducted to review security procedures and determine if policies or procedures were followed by security staff leading up to the incident.
