WCLO's Stan Stricker reports on fair attendance

Rock County 4-H Fair Board President Bob Arndt says he's getting a lot of positive reaction to this year's exhibition.

Arndt says everyone did a great job, and the crowds seemed to have a good time. Especially popular was expanding the rodeo to two days. He says that's a show that really puts butts in the seats. Mutton Busting also turned out to be a popular spectator sport, but Arndt had wished for more entrants.

As far as attendance, Arndt says the weather appears to have had an impact, with about 74,000 attending this year, compared to about 80,000 last year. The five year running average, including this year, is about 85,000.

Who has money to go to the fair? My daughter is no longer in 4-H because of the expense between buying things for projects, travel to and from meetings, donations for various community service venues, sports, club activities, county activities, etc. It isn't cheap to be in 4-H much less then having to be at the fair every day or nearly every day and purchasing food and beverage; then kids want rides and games....and sometimes you have no choice but to pay for parking.

The entertainment was lousy! I didnt really recognize the names of ANY of the entertainers. And a rodeo...ugh. I think this is by far the worst year for entertainment, and I agree with the previous post-er...i think the attendance numbers are padded a bit..theres no way there were even that many people there. The weather didnt help things..but if you are going to go to the trouble to have entertainment--its got to be worth the trip.

the fair sucked and its getting worse every year. entertainment was bad and i believe someone is padding the numbers....the fair was down lots more than stated by arndt. its obvious just look around there was no one there, hot or not. its the cost and for that cost u get nothing. even the food vendors arent there anymore, the fair board is driving them out with outrageous fees. go to jefferson or walworth county and enjoy a professional fair with great entertainment. btw when are you going to get the fair out of the cramp confines of the middle of janesville??? just keep feeding the money pit with improvements that isnt helping the attendance at all......

Sorry some people get irritated with the weather !) Just to much going on that week. Try to get there next year. I went to the Madison one every year for about 10 years. It was neat to have a smaller one right in the back yard though.
I was kidding about the "abuse". there are sa couple articles about this being "abuse of animals"

My family went for the 1st in about 5 years. Yes, it was hot, but we still had a good time. I will go back next year. We need to support our community and the kids that work hard all year on their projects and animals. Frogger, you need to stop being so negative and look at the positive. Or you need a drink! Anyway, good job to all those who put on the fair! Well done!

Wow frogger... didn't mean to "set you off"! When the first few comments are negatives, I tend to try to show some optimism.
Yes it was hot... its JULY! Sorry you couldn't make it this year. I had fun! :)

Whatever, you two... I went with my grandkidlets, dumped a ton of money and had a great time! The kids will remember these fair days as the best summer entertainment they ever had! Have gone every year... Its all about the kids. Its the summer staple to look forward to.
Don't like it? Don't go! I appreciate an affordable way to entertain my family.

I was gonna go, but with the 12% property value raise and the schools gonna raise my taxes also I needed to save the money to pay these taxes.

I was going to go to rodeo but the ABUSE- jk
I was there last year sitting with all the sweaty people including myself and felt gross. NO air movement in the nasty grandstand.
