WCLO's Stan Stricker reports how one district is forced to close, while others have almost no teachers absent

Edgerton Schools were closed Thursday. Superintendent Dennis Pauli says 77% of teachers were absent.

He says despite teachers decision to stay out of the classroom, their union has been very considerate of administration's needs by informing him of anticipated actions.

In contrast only about 11% called in sick in Janesville Thursday, and less than 2% were missing from the classroom in Beloit.

I wonder why johnboy thinks the Billions that unions give to their (puppets) candidates, somehow makes them upstanding jerks and OK. Its money taken from the local workers pocket and handed over to National union bosses and national Democrats. On top of that, the union money is picked from all union member pockets, whether they want it taken or not. That is what is called theft in the rest of the world. Where is worker freedom under such union dictaitors? Jobs are created by private individuals and businesses, not unions! It seems that a couple of posters sound like they must be lining their pockets from unkown sources.

Namma,
"Ask yourself this question: IF public education (i.e. unionized education) is working so well, why is the US 23rd in the world in achievement? ...behind third world countries with poverty the likes of which makes America's lowest socio-economic status folks look like they're living in the lap of luxury! "
I will answer your question and I am sure you will debate it but I don't really care. We may be 23rd in achievement, what does that mean anyway, because we educate every child. The "countries with poverty" as you say, don't educate every one. The people that get an education are the people that can afford it. So in other words these countries are basically similar to a private school here. If you would like to debate why private schools do better here I woul love that as well.

First off, all folks need to go to Red Box and get the DVD..."Waiting for Superman." Secondly, the Governor is correct. The state cannot continue to pay the pensions and Cadillac health care for public employees any longer. It is simply unsustainable. Thirdly, unions are killing public education. Ask yourself this question: IF public education (i.e. unionized education) is working so well, why is the US 23rd in the world in achievement? ...behind third world countries with poverty the likes of which makes America's lowest socio-economic status folks look like they're living in the lap of luxury! How about we DUMP the worthless teachers...and really PAY the cream of the crop. Want to improve education...get rid of the unions! Want to keep it the same...abysmal..then defeat Walker's budget. And I've BEEN THERE, SEEN IT, WORKED IT, LIVED IT...up close and personal.

IMO - I have learned something very important in life and that is you can pull any statistics out of the magic hat to prove a point. Although some of this is true it does not portray the total picture of ALL the WORKERS. Seems like you are forgetting the average daily worker and that NOT all of those you posted will be affected by Gov. Scotty....lol

11% of teachers... It would have been nice to see how that was distributed among the schools on Thursday. I heard that kids at Edison were herded from room to room to provide supervision and some class sizes were well over 50 while kids were sorted to even out the mix. I also heard that most of the teachers at Parker showed up. I would think that good reporting would get these numbers.

Why would I support teachers who walk off the job, lie about being sick, break the law and their contract, and set a bad example for the students? They should resign or be fired as they certainly don't care anything about teaching the children, when they walk out, being AWOL and deny the kids from getting an education that we are paying for The way they act it causes one to wonder if teachers have any education themselves. They are slaves to the unions and now want all of us to become slaves too, by taking every cent we have and failing to respect anyone else, including the students.Any wonder why the US ranks about last in education when compared to all major countries? They should be paid on merit, that would cut their pay substantialy. When everybody and the local, state and Fed governments are bankrupt, and it won't be long, you will being standing in the depression soup lines with everyone else, and it will be because of the greedy unions bosses and greedy members.

Why am I only hearing about the teachers everywhere I go? I thought this bill was to affect all state employees and not only the teachers? Am I to believe the Democrats only care about the teachers and not the rest of the group? That party sold their followers out by not passing the union agreement plan into law in hopes of getting a job with Walker. If it were me, I would be more angry at the Democrats before looking at Walker! Just an observation from an Independent!

IMO: Your stats don't mention one Rock County district. How are they doing? Many of your stats come from big cities or schools with big tax bases that may want to pay that to keep successful staff.

Janesville teachers could have made their point without shutting down the entire district. They could have organized and sent a delegation to represent them without effecting our children's education.

They are fighting for the right to have a say in the size of classes. Do we really want classes of 40+ students?

All I have to say is Hooray for the teachers!!!!! Our government is supposed to be for the people and by the people. If americans had gotten off their duffs and stood up for social security, medicare, their jobs, and most of all their families rights we would never be in the shape we are in today. It is time to stand up and fight for what we have and don't let the government or anyone take any more earnings, healthcare, and most of all our rights away from us. Reduce all the politicians salaries and benefits by 10% and see if they just sit there and take it. We must do it with dignity and peace, but we must stand up and fight for what is ours!

i feel the teachers are right for doing what they are doing. if it was your job and you were the one being fired/less pay/less benfits you cant say that you wouldnt fight for your rights or whats fair in your job. if you didnt fight for your job then you dont desver it.

I was proud of the Janesville teachers going to work today. Now I know they are just as selfish as the other districts that had to close. How disappointing.

WOW, see what a 4 year degree will do?
