A quarter million dollars won't be enough to fuel Rock County Sheriff's Office squad cars in 2011. Sheriff Bob Spoden is asking county officials for an extra 72-thousand dollars because of a fuel budgeting shortfall. Kyle Geissler reports.

Robert Spoden

Higher than expected gas prices are leaving the Rock County Sheriff's Office short on its fuel budget.

Sheriff Bob Spoden is asking county officials for an extra $72,000. The sheriff's department budgeted $250,000 for fuel in 2011. He's budgeting about $300,000 for fuel next year.

Spoden says they've not been putting on more miles than expected.

The sheriff's department needs to fuel patrol squads, command vehicles, transport vans, boats, snowmobiles, and a bus.

Two county committees take up the fuel request this week and the county board will take up the request at a future meeting.

I'd start by getting rid of the administrators take home cars. Drive your own car to work Bob.

I agree mini...its foolish to drive them around unless there's bad weather.

They need the Tahoe's for bad weather especially in the winter! They can also tow boats, atv's, etc. with them where they wouldn't be with squad cars.

Maybe they should stop driving around those Chevy Tahoes and drive the reg squad cars. What exactly do they need those for anyways?
