Work can now begin in earnest on the I-90 expansion project through Rock County. Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday morning at the site of the new Highway 11/Racine Street interchange. Gottlieb says the interchange is the first step of the expansion, and will be a classic diamond pattern with two round-a-bouts. One goal is to improve safety at the interchange, which averages 20 crashes a year. Janesville City Council President Kathy Voskuil says the interchange will allow easier access to city attractions and businesses. Beloit City Manager Larry Arft says the entire project is essential for economic development. The interchange portion of the project should be complete by Thanksgiving.
