Sequestration Cuts Affect Section 8 in Janesville

Federal sequestration cuts mean less rental assistance for low income residents of Janesville.

The Janesville Community Development Authority was recently notified that they would be receiving a $205,000 reduction in federal funding for the section 8 rental assistance program.

Neighborhood Services Director Jennifer Petruzello says that mean eliminating 33 people from the program through attrition, serving just 510 families, instead of the 543 they currently serve.  That means those who have been on the waiting list - sometime for up to three years, will have to continue to wait.

On the positive side the the City of Janesville will be receiving an additional $61,000 in Community Development Block Grant Funds for the Federal Government. That money will go to Echo, Healthnet, and the Literacy Connection, as well as towards grants for owner occupied rehabilitation projects.
