Murder suspect appears in Rock County court

Self inflicted injuries may hamper the murder trial of a Town of Plymouth man accused of shooting his neighbor last February. 75-year-old Daniel Bellard appeared in Rock County court Tuesday afternoon via video conference. His defense attorney Robert Junig says Bellard probably didn't understand a word said in court, because of extremely bad hearing.  District Attorney David O'Leary asked for a $500,000 cash bail in part because Bellard had tried to defeat justice by shooting himself twice in the head. Judge James Daley ordered $100,000.  Bellard is accused of shooting 59-year-old Christine Gestrich in his barn on West Stuart Road. Court records indicate he told investigators she was going to take his land. Daley did order a competency hearing for Bellard, and expects him back in court in a month.
