An ordinance which would allow for publicly funded City Council campaigns in Janesville may be dead in the water.
The proposal from council member Sam Liebert would allow council candidates to either go the traditional route with their fundraising, or choose a publicly financed option, which makes them eligible for matched donations from the City of a maximum of $1000.
The Janesville City Council discussed the topic on Monday night, and several council members spoke out against the issue.
Ultimately the council voted four to two to table the issue until after the next election cycle. Council members Marklein and Liebert were not in favor of tabling, and Kathy Voskuil was absent.
