The bitter cold temperatures prompt a warning from a local medical professional. Mercy Health System EMS Director Dr. Jay MacNeal says this is the type of weather people can die from. MacNeal says with the wind chills predicted early next week, frostbite can begin in as little as five minutes. He says one problem with frostbite is the area goes numb and it's hard to tell how serious the situation is. He says several weather related cases have already turned up, even before the most bitter cold arrived. He suggests avoiding going outside, but says if you must, be prepared. He says wear a hat, coat, and gloves, even if you're taking the car. He advises having an emergency kit in your vehicle, and avoiding outdoor recreation activities alone.
