Janesville chase ends in arrest

A 21-year-old Janesville man is behind bars after a 3-minute high-speed pursuit through a Janesville east side neighborhood Thursday night.  Janesville police say Alex C. Schenck, , was arrested on charges of felony fleeing, recklessly endangering safety, possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana, obstructing an officer, a probation violation, four outstanding warrants plus cited for operating after revocation and open intoxicants in a motor vehicle. Police say the incident started a little before 11:30 when a Janesville police officer was investigating a theft complaint in the 400 block of S. Ringold St. That’s when he noticed a car traveling north and at a high rate of speed on South Fremont Street. When the officer tried to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to pull over and the pursuit started.  Police say as Schenck drove through the neighborhood of East Racine Street, he turned off his car’s headlights and drove through stop signs while traveling at speeds in excess of 60 mph. Just when the officer decided to suspend the pursuit for safety reasons, officers say Schenck’s driving forced another Janesville squad off the road to avoid a collision.  When other officers began following Schenck at normal speeds they lost him in the area of Racine Street and Palmer Drive but later found his vehicle unoccupied in the rear parking of a bar in the 2200 block of East Racine St. Police and its canine unit were tracking footprints in the 1700 block of East Racine St., when an officer saw Schenck emerge from a wood line. That’s where he was taken into custody.
