Local unemployment rate increases
Rock County area unemployment inches up in February. The Janesville Metropolitan Statistical Area's experience in February is much like the rest of Wisconsin. The Department of Workforce Development reports unemployment rates increased in all 12 major reporting areas. The local area's rate only increased one-tenth of one percent from January, to 8.1%. This is still much lower than the 9.4% a year ago. As far as cities, Janesville's unemployment rate is 8.5%, and Beloit sits at 10.6%. Beloit was one of only two larger cities in the state where the rate did not go up from January to February. The state unemployment rate sits at 7%.
