Beloit police shoot suspect fleeing in vehicle

Police shoot a suspect in a fleeing vehicle after they say he struck and killed a 47-year-old woman while trying to get away from them.

Beloit Police say they responded to the report of an unwanted person in the 900 block of 10th Street just after 7:30 (Sunday) night. As officers were attempting to take 40-year-old Christopher Rutherford of Beloit into custody, he escaped from them and fled in a vehicle.

While pulling away, police say Rutherford struck and killed Sheila Rosenbaum of Beloit, who was also the victim in the unwanted person report.

Police fired their weapons at the fleeing vehicle, and it eventually crashed in the 800 block of Roosevelt. Rutherford then attempted to flee on foot, and officers took him into custody a short distance away.

Rutherford was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound he received from police.

This incident remains under investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
