Beloit police release names of officers involved in shooting
Beloit police release the names of two officers accused of shooting a homicide suspect who was fleeing in a vehicle.
Officer David Elrod, and Officer Amy Copeland have been put on administrative assignment within the police department's Division of support services while the Wisconsin department of Justice Investigates the incident.
Beloit Police say they responded to the 900 block of 10th Street on May 11th on the report of an unwanted person.
Police were attempting to take 40-year-old Christopher Rutherford of Beloit into custody when he got away and fled in a vehicle.
Authorities say that Rutherford struck and killed 47-year-old Sheila Rosenbaum of Beloit, who was also the victim in the unwanted persons report, while he was trying to get away.
Police fired several rounds at Rutherford's vehicle, one of which hit him. He was taken to a local hospital after crashing his vehicle in the 800 block of Roosevelt.
Beloit Police said Tuesday that Rutherford had been released from a Janesville hospital, and was placed under arrest for first degree reckless homicide and felony fleeing resulting in death.
