JVL youth sports group bans guns at ball fields

A man who lost a loaded handgun on a youth baseball field has prompted a changes of policy for the Janesville Youth Baseball and Softball Association.

The group plans to post signs at the Youth Sports Complex declaring the ball fields it leases from the City of Janesville weapon-free zones.

State law prohibits municipalities from banning guns in public places, however groups these properties can ban firearms at their events.

On June 8th, a Whitewater man dropped his load-conceal carry handgun in an outfield, and didn't report it until the next day. By then a child had already discovered it and turned it over to an umpire.
