Cock breeding suspect held on $22,000 cash bond

A Rock County man accused of breeding roosters for fighting, and possession 16 pounds of marijuana is held on a $22,000 cash bond.

37-year-old Jorge A. Marquez of the town of Newark appeared in Rock County Court Friday.

When investigators executed a search warrant at Marquez's residence on Tuesday they found 61 roosters in cages and 21 hens with checks.

According to a criminal complaint, Marquez admitted to breeding the roosters to fight, although he knows it's illegal in the United States.

Police say he also admitted to borrowing against his 401(k) to purchase the marijuana for resale.

Marquez's preliminary hearing has been continued to July 16th to give him time to hire an attorney.
