Sheriff candidates face off at fair

The three recurring topics in forums focusing on the Rock County Sheriff's race so far have been the area's heroin problem, budgeting for weapons, and salary.  During a Thursday morning event, at the Rock County Fair in the WCLO/WJVL Radio tent, both candidates took each other to task.  A highlight included Challenger,  Captain Gary Groelle saying he was "critical" of the sheriff accepting a "huge" raise.  Incumbent Robert Spoden was quick to respond by saying he found the comments "distasteful", considering Groelle accepted a raise in January, another last June, and another last year in January.  Groelle meanwhile is touting a string of summits he's recently attended to educate himself on the heroin problem.  He says he unveiled a seven step strategy early in the campaign and wants to create more community partnerships to educate the public.  Spoden says there's a lack of resources and treatment he calls unacceptable.  Both candidates are running as Democrats, with no Republican challenger.  The primary is August 12th.
