Gazette photographers Bill Olmsted and Dan Lassiter choose their favorite photographs of 2009.
Of his first choice, Bill Olmsted says, 'The sight and sound of Canada geese on the move always stirs deep feelings in me. The spectacle of these four geese and thousands of others honking and flying through a clear spring sky outside of Delavan was incredible. Too few people in our area are aware of this goose stopover spot on Turtle Creek and fail to take advantage of easy viewing.'

Olmsted says of his second choice, 'A quiet man of dignity, Harry Menz was finally being recognized for an outstanding display of character and courage by the French government. Although pleased, the fact that to me he seemed a bit unimpressed by the whole thing was perhaps the most telling aspect of the story.'

Of his first choice, Dan Lassiter says, 'A strikingly pretty moment after this winter's first major snowstorm. Sometimes you just get lucky, in this case the dogs seem to be looking both ways for traffic.'

Lassiter's second choice is 'one of the photos I took at a sendoff for local soldiers held at Craig High School. A touching moment between a father and his daughter. Surprisingly, I had photographed him seeing her as a baby, when he arrived home from action at Dane County Regional Airport. I talked to Craig Principal Mike Kuehne a few days after the event and he told me he hadn't realized the impact of the event until he saw the photos the next day in the Gazette.'

Of his third choice, Lassiter says, 'One of my favorite swimming photos ever. I love the way the water forms a bubble around the swimmer's face. I've never seen this photo before.'
