Mess Sergeant Ernest "Ernie" Spry, stationed in Babenhausen, Germany and served in the United States Army for four years. As strong supporters of the war effort, siblings Everett (Army), Donald (Army), Ernest (Army), and Elva (US Navy-WAVES) Spry all enlisted in the service during World War II (their younger brother Norbert also served in Alaska after the war ended). In 1942, he caught pneumonia and was taken off of USAT Dorchester in St. John's, Newfoundland; shortly thereafter, the ship was torpedoed, resulting in the loss of 672 out of a little more than 900 men. After his health was restored, he was sent to attend cook and baker school at Fort Benning. After completing his training, he was shipped off to France, and from there was sent to/stationed in Babenhausen, where he spent the rest of his time in the service. After being discharged in 1945, he returned to his job at the Parker Pen Company, and married his wife, Dorothy, a few years later. They have one daughter, two grandchildren; he lives in the Memory Care wing at Cedar Crest, in Janesville. He still speaks fondly of his time in the Army, and was always proud to be a veteran for the United States Military.

Capt. Fred Bruni
Commander of Headquarters Company of the 192nd Tank Battalion, a unit made up of National Guard units from Wisconsin, Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio. The Battalion arrived at Clark Field in the Philippine Islands in the fall of 1941. On December 8, 1941 they were attacked by Japanese forces. These attacks continued until until April of 1942 when they surrendered to the Japanese. He was held as a Prisoner of War until he was executed by the Japanese. In 1952 his remains, along with those of the other soldiers murdered the day he was, were returned to The United States. Their remains could not be identified individually, so they were all buried in a common grave in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Missouri.

Of the 2,949 killed and 10,364 wounded in the Invasion of Saipan, Ernest Falk took heavy shrapnel to his chest on the Island, seriously wounding him. When he saw a medic coming his way, he said to go help another young lad whose stomach was ripped open. The medic told him because his intestines were exposed, he had little chance to survive. That's the kind of man Ernie was his entire life - always
putting others before him unselfishly. Ernie was awarded the Purple Heart but never boasted. Ernie touched many lives in his 98 years on earth. His generosity and big heart continues to shine through his
spirit. God's Peace, Ernie. Semper Fi.
