Julie came well prepared with the facts and was able to connect them to an even greater need - that residents be made aware Janesville's government sees our landfill as an income stream that puts about $200K in our general fund annually. Unless and until residents understand that we are a dump site for other communities who find it cost effective to truck their trash to Janesville we will be doomed to fill our landfill in record time. Only when they feel the financial pinch will those communities take their business elsewhere. To extend the useful life of this landfill we need to put pressure on local government to enact tipping fees that are on a par with those of other landfills in surrounding areas, and to consider fee-based alternatives for residents such as an increase in annual landfill fees. Julie came up with an estimate of approximately $2 per year. I'd like to know if that would be sufficient to replace the income from outside dumpers. If so, it's a no-brainer. I'd certainly be willing to pay an extra $24 pear year. Organizations like the Network can serve the community well by putting these kinds of issues squarely in the public view and keeping them there.
