I alerted people in my neighborhood and all my friends. That is how I found out a business near the humane society was robbed recently and in the same area a car broken into and the electronics removed. I think the media should encourage citizens to report and the media should publish those reports with the criteria I outlined above.
I am not satisfied with the way the police are protecting Janesville residents. Everyone I know has been vandalized by graffiti or robbed. There is an epidemic of theft in Janesville and the police admit they can't even keep up with the number of theft crimes.
I have been the victim of theft. The police would not question a neighbor who thinks she saw people casing the house. They told ME to tell her to phone THEM. She does not want to get involved. The police do not investigate. They wait for the suspects to fall into their lap.
There is information we need to protect ourself and it is being withheld by the police. When there is crime in a neighborhood, all the residents should know it. Just saying, "the east side" is not enough.
We should be told the block where the crime occurred as in, "the 27 hundred block of Milwaukee St". We should be told the exact method of operation. Did they enter an unlocked car? Did they enter a house at night or in the day? First floor or second floor? Through a window or door? While people were home or gone? Is there a physical description? Were there strangers in the neighborhood before the crime and what did they look like? Then the people in that area can take specific precautions to prevent victimization based on the method of operation.
The fact is Janesville is being overrun with theft and unless the police start doing real work with community residents we are just prey for vultures.
I do not think the police are giving us the information we need to protect ourself. They are not there when the crime occurs. We must protect our self! Not coming out to talk to someone who may have important information is inexcusable.
I would like more media reports on how the courts are sentencing thieves when by some miracle they are actually apprehended in Janesville because the same offenders keep coming back.
I would also like to know who is buying all this electronic equipment? Are the local stores inventories being checked for serial numbers? Someone is buying this stuff and the buyers are right here in Janesville.
