I ran across this news article being discussed in several Facebook communities, and I'll be sharing it with others. People all over the country, who had never before even heard of Janesville are astounded by the decision, and rightly so.

Read the papers, Councilmen. Raising backyard chickens is eco-friendly, community building, and not only socially acceptable, but very popular these days. You've made a wrong choice based on some really bad reasoning. It's a shame.

This is not just a small city phenomenon nor limited to the Midwest..."In New York, where chickens (but not roosters, whose loud crowing can disturb neighbors) are allowed in LIMITLESS quantities, there are at least 30 community gardens raising them for eggs, and a City Chicken Project run by a local nonprofit that aims to educate the community about their benefits." http://www.newsweek.com/id/168740/page/2...

From a look at this paper's poll on the City Council's decision, I don't think this will be the last we hear of this. The town's people won't stand for a ludicrous decision.

Who are those that voted against such a basic right? Names please?

KEEP PECKING AT THEM! I was wondering if anyone made the argument about what was modern. Up until the early 50's it was common for people to keep chickens and rabbits in their back yard for food and eggs along with a garden. If people did not have this during the depression people would have starved. In the 50's "The Space Age" we as a society wanted to become more modern. Perfect lawns were our focus, Commercial farming and Factory farms were the way of the future! Along with that came pesticides, nitrogen runoff into waterways and recalls of vegetables do to contamination from commercial farming. I laugh when people say pigs and chickens are farm animals. Ya they are but the ones we eat don't really come from the kind of farm most people picture in their head if they even think about it at all. The swine flu came from stressed pigs at factory farms. Pigs have a higher I.Q. than a dog and are closer to primates intelligence. Factory farms keep them in a pen they can hardly move and they never see the light of day. Swine flu from stressed animals crossed over for the 2ND TIME! Don't forget the "BIRD FLU". Chickens are kept in bad conditions also, cramped space and over crowding these animal are given antibiotics, growth hormones and who knows what. Chickens can live 20 years and are smart. They can be taught to come to their name, love to cuddle and coo. Your probably wondering if I eat meat, Ya I do. I keep rabbits and have kept chickens on and off for my 52 years of life but I give them a better life better health and I have respect for their life. I butcher them myself, its not an easy thing to do but who is more insensitive me or the person that needs to pay someone to kill an animal for them so they don't have to think about what there eating for dinner? Little known fact..the men of World War 2 ate rabbit meat, that's what the government gave them. Up until the "50" most people ate rabbit now its just in fancy restaurants. Its healthier for you than chicken and more dense. The Europeans have it right and live in harmony with the animals and land.
Why not ask if you could do a pilot program with chickens in the City. Think about maybe a few people with chicken picked by the board keeping chickens on a temporary level to get a feel for it and what its all about. Also did anyone ask the board to to " Google chicken egg factory farms" so they could see why its important.
