Tornado Strikes Rose's family farm

By Rose Stricker ( Contact )   October 22, 2007

Maybe over the weekend you heard or read or saw something about the "Miracle Baby", a 14-month-old Michigan boy who survived being thrown from his home by a Friday morning tornado. This story obsessed me all weekend. After that tornado destroyed the Miracle Baby's home, it continued on to hit my brothers' properties. One brother lost a 130-year-old barn. Another brother's roof was peeled from his home while he and his family slept.

Phone calls and e-mails to my relatives went unanswered Friday and all day Saturday. I knew everyone was safe, but I had no idea how bad the damage was.

While I searched the internet frantically looking for some news or photos or videos from the local TV, radio, and newspapers, I became more and more frustrated by what I thought was lack of coverage.
It finally occurred to me that perhaps I should be thankful that my family's tragedy was NOT newsworthy. No one was hurt. Not even any animals. It wasn't big news.

Several people across Michigan lost their lives that morning. And one young boy survived. THAT's news.

Everyone is very grateful the damage wasn't worse. My family is counting their many blessings, not their insurance policies.

You may have heard about the Miracle Baby. But you probably didn't hear a peep about my brothers. And I am very happy about that.
