Decorating Bessie
If you've been by the Del Taco on the north side of Janesville recently, you probably noticed Bessie wearing a Spanish headdress called a "mantilla" (pronounced mahn-TEE-uh). It is my understanding that the decoration was in celebration of Del Taco's grand opening, and it was supposed to have been removed in a timely manner. (The Janesville Gazette has details and a photo here.)
Meanwhile, I have heard rumblings that several folks were rather upset with the frilly addition.
Keeping in mind that Bessie is privately owned and not city property... and the Oasis buyers did not have to keep her at all... what do you think?
Which, if any, decoration would be acceptable? Should Bessie never be decorated? How do you feel about “seasonal enhancements”? Cheese head during Packer season? Scarf in the dead of winter? Hawaiian lei in the summer?
Should the owners take Bessie more seriously? Or, should folks take her less seriously?

Rose...It doesn't matter if the city owns Bessie, or not. The point is that it's the first thing travelers see as they enter our city. I love eating beef, I just don't like the idea of it representing my hometown. :)

I think it should b totally upto the owners to dress her or not dress her up as long as no city regulations are broke. Maybe they could come up with a Fundraiser idea like auctioning off to th highest bidder. The money could go to local organizations/charties like Echo, United Way.

I guess they did back in the 70's call Parker "Cow Pie High". But of course that is when it was out in the country.
From what I heard, from an employee of Del is it will be removed soon so don't panic Janesville, we will then have to think of how to dress her next month!!

Hannah, that would be a good shot to get them up there. It would be kind of funny to watch someone do try it though. Based on the size of the suspected panties, I do not think it would be as funny to see the owner of said panties taking them off in preparation of the launch. There you go, another contest to use as a fundraiser for some good cause. Have ladies pay $10 to do the pantieslingshot as many times as they can in 1 minute. Time starts when the panties are removed from their body. The spectators can pay $1 to watch. Hoop or hook them to the head, horns, or ears and they win some big prize. It's like a hole-in-one charity giveaway, only with a cow and panties. Wait, that is a really messed up combo! It's ok Hannah, that was my thought before settling on a plastic garbage bag. I have to admit, Mexican headdress was a bit down on my list.

i dont agree with the headdress because it looks more like somebody slung up their panties on her head. I think the chz head thing would be neat and wreath at xmas.

Patriot1: Again, Janesville *didn't* choose a cow. Bessie is private property.
So, we'll put you down in the "less seriously" column. :)

My honest opinion, for what it's worth, is people should get a life. It's just an ornament. Frankly, I think it's an eyesore, and I wish Janesville could've picked something more appealing for the "Gateway" to our city. I don't like being known as "Cow-Town".....do you?

Thanks for the explanation. When I read the part where you suggested "a scarf" I had a flashback to the Rachael Ray controversy a last week. We need to be careful about dressing it up too nice. We do not want anyone fantasizing about how pretty she is. We already had a case up north that made national news a few months ago. Let's have a dress-up bessie contest and do a fundraising calendar! The December photo can be Bessie au natural.
