Taste Buds for Rent

By Rose Stricker ( Contact )   November 27, 2007

The Associated Press had an interesting story today. Students of Utah State University are being paid 65 bucks to taste experimental cheese. Not bad for a college gig, right? (Hey, shouldn't they be doing this in Wisconsin?)

Well, researchers in Utah are trying to find ways to take omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for your heart, and add it to cheese. Students need to note if the cheese tastes fishy, rancid, or maybe just right. One taster admits that some of the cheese is pretty bad.

In addition to the money, students get a coupon for free ice cream.

Here's my question: How much would they have to give you to taste “experimental cheese”?

Or...

What would you taste-test for 65 dollars and a dish of ice cream?

It depends what other ingredients are in the experimental cheese--if it is just the Omega-3's added, I'd probably participate for less than $65! I think I know why they didn't do the tasting in WI, though--we know what the best cheese in the world tastes like and they would NEVER find a suitable recipe to please us! Their experiment would be fruitless!

For $65---how many times can I get in line?
