bigskigor – Do some research before posting as you are coming off as a complete moron. For starters, it is Milwaukee “St.” not “Ave.” and Ruger “Ave.” not “Road”. All the other intersections have been discussed on another thread as to why tunnels are not necessary. The Racine St. crossing is not the same as the Milwaukee St. crossing. Racine St. is much wider, has stop lights to stop traffic, has an island in the middle, and much better sight lines. The Ruger crossing has only two lanes of traffic as does the Wright Road crossing. It is also not people being lazy on the trail and having to wait. The correct term would be impatient. If the people were lazy, they would not be using the wonderful trail and enjoying what this great city has to offer. Instead, they would be sitting at home making foolish comments like yourself. I would guess when the tunnel is being built, the trail users, like myself, will utilize the other parts of the trail. I do not really envision a whole lot of complaining. Finally, your stats are well noted but I could rattle of stats all day how I have seen drivers blow right through the intersection. Let it go folks. The tunnel is needed and the city is much better off in the longrun.
Seems how they are going ahead with the round-about at Wuthering Hills and it is a 1 lane entry I would suggest making Milwaukee one lane from Wright all the way to the HWY. That would slow down traffic a bit there and then someone on the Stan Milam show suggested traffic enforcement cameras at the light for the trail crossing. I like that idea! We also have to start enforcing the speed limits starting with the police department and municiple veihcles. I can't count how many times I get passed in a hurry by someone in a police car (no lights or siren on) and people driving vehicles with municiple plates! Lead by example police department, monkey see monkey do.
Hwy 11 over by Monroe has a bike trail that crosses the Hwy and they don't have a tunnel. and the cars are going over 55MPH go figure the people over in Monroe must have gone to school the day they taught "how to cross a street (Hwy) safely.
I hope everyone remembers the council members that voted for this monstrosity come election time.
