These proposed beer sales are a logical progression from the notion that Janesville Jets Hockey Games, featuring teenage athletes, were not viable without beer sales. That sad and slippery slope is evident. When this opinion was brought up on WCLO at the time, San Milam and Al Fagerly literaly mocked those with such concerns. The idea that we will solve budget problems this way recalls the old notion that a State Lottery and later Dog Tracks would eliminate much of the need for taxation.

The previous post shows the same cynical and resentful atittude that also shows through in the Schulte list. It speaks to the great difficulty in reforming government at all levels. If I followed their example I'd walk out on my church and every other organization I belong to when the going gets tough. I'd ask for my contributions back when a decision didn't please me.

It would seem that Rashkin and Steeber are trying to make the City Council a subset of the Democratic Party. They McDonald and Brunner have made it clear they are not on the side of taxpayers. I knew Rashkin wants to be a politician when he grows up.

This a a way to charge fees rather than call them what they are - taxes. If the city is having a budget problem paying for fire protection, it is time to think out of the box. Fire protection should be outsourced. The city needs to remove itself from the union contract and the long term legacy expenses involved. The situation is no different than what has been faced by private business except that a business can't invent reasons to charge customers more. The day is coming when government institutions and workers can no longer operate risk free. They can not be exempt from economic reality and common sense.

TCB. I have met Jeff Thomas and talked with Jeff Thomas. Yes he was a one issue candidate and totally unelectable. However, speaking with him in no way revealed a man with a history as far left at Obama. Some of Thomas's kindest words were of his respect for Paul Ryan. He never spewed the leftist class warfare stuff promoted by the Obama and Krupp campaigns. Other than that I agree with everything you said. As to your other question - the last Republican elected prior to Ryan was Mark Neumann. He was a far right idealogue not in the same league as Paul Ryan. We are well rid of Neumann. My main point remains that Stan Milam turned things upside down. Obama did not overcome things in the 1st District. Paul Ryan overcomes what should have been a natural disadvantage in 2008.

TCB - Obama is way to the left of Jeff Thomas and he won the district. Your logic elludes me.

The first Congressional District is an oddball. There is no dominant municipality and no media that encompass the entire district. Rock County is organized effectively by the Democratic Party and it's allies in organized labor. There is little cohesion or organization by the Republican Party. The same is probably true of the other counties. The district is probably blessed not to have an effective regional party organization. That allows a campaign to center on views and qualifications. Stan - I respectfully think your summation is turned upside down. The election of Ryan shows that, in a district like ours' a local candicate of one party can overcome the money and organizational advantage, nationally, of the other party. Paul Ryan probably would not survice in a British type parliamentary system.

Paul Ryan has made the right decision to stay in Congress and work on issues. He is a rare politician who looks beyond the next election. He is the future and the future will catch up to him. Remember the last Congressman from here who went to work for the President? - Les Aspin. That was in his own party yet Clinton still stabbed him in the back. Aspin was washed up in less than 2 years (not releated to his unfortunate passing a while later). Aspin was also a policy expert but serving the administration ruined all that.

This is no time for the city to engage in Social Engineering. At least plastic and paper are made by American workers. Take a look at the so called environmentally friendly bags they sell in stores - all Made in China. Go ahead and put more unnecessary regulation on business and see how many want to come to Janesville. It is time for the council to look at real problems and stop playing like Madison.

I am thrilled with the results. Enough of the partisan recall signers.
