"Opportunities" to promote correct spelling?

On Janesville and Beloit look for opportunities to share

Zythia,

Education is a priority and yet our children continue to rank below other nations in science, math, and other areas.

Long term priority? What does this mean? Compulsory education is a requirement and yet children freely chose to drop out and a vast majority, at least in Janesville never graduate from college. Look at the local education demographics. This is not to say that all children should graduate from a 4 year university, trade schools, and other routes are great career options but the drive should be internal-not mandated by govt. The days of getting a job "on the line" or at parker pen are long gone. Then again, some in this town cannot move past this fact.

The district spends more than $10,000 per pupil per year and this is still not enough? How much is required for a "good" education?

On Would you be willing to make a donation to help your local school district fill a budget gap?

Youkillme,

If unions are the "best thing to happen in America" (your words) why do more than 90% of all businesses in the United States operate without a union?

Are those 90% so ill enformed about the benefits of unionization that they simply are not union shops? If its so great why do a huge vast majority of business eschew unionizing?

On Do you support Scott Walker’s proposal to strip many public workers of most collective bargaining rights?

What is wrong? Your first mistake is to take your hard earned capital to this fast food place. Bring your lunch, skip lunch, or choose to spend your money elsewhere. Easy choice.

The fact you remained patient and did not speak to the manager tacitly allows boorish behavior to be tolerated. However, I am not certain I would do anything differently. That being the case, fast food companies want to provide a quick meal at a resonable price and probably would appreciate to know about this experience so they can improve the customer's visit the next time.

Tim, you seem like a very patient person. You have an easy opportunity to name the place of the incident (happy meal might give it away)-but you took the high road, despite your experience-something no line or coffee refill may know nothing about.
Clearly there are customer service issues handling a coffee refill, a person who is not in line (looking to bypass the 4 who are in line), the manager not being in tune to the lobby, the failure of the newer employee to give the customer his/her correct change, serving people out of order....and probably not thanking you for your business either.

On A (not so) fast food story.

In Wisconsin drivers pay for road projects through the gas tax and vehicle registration fees. All of that money, literally billions of dollars, is deposited into the Transportation Fund, a segregated state fund that is supposed to be used only for transportation projects, nothing else. Guess what Stan-that money is used for other per projects! And what is your solution-increase fees on drivers even more!

Wisconsin's gasoline tax is variable and stands at 32.9 cents per gallon, which is the nation's 8th highest and is indexed to inflation. This fee is adjusted every April 1st. I bet this year on April fools day, people who purchase gasoline in the state of Wisconsin will pay an even larger State gas tax rate! What will it buy? It will go to srvices and pet projects that have nothing to do with transportation-this is exactly what an open toll slush fund would create. Stan, by wanting to increase the cost to drive on Wisconsin road, by default you are allowing this kind of abhorent, unchecked behavior to continue. Why not look to the people (i.e. elected officials) who have taken more than $1 billion dollars from the Wisconsin state transportation fund since 2002 and demand accountability? Legislators need to look in the mirror and ask themselves what has that billion dollars from the Transporation fund bought-your solution of going to the taxpayer without demanding accountability is one of the problems.

Riche:

I think you and I agree on more than we disagree. Also, as for D1 republicans, I actually meant presidential politics. I believe Neumann ran for senate and lost-which is one reason he is gone.

If D1 dems continue to put forth candidates like Thomas and Krupp, they are in trouble. With this being true, I do not believe Stanly Milams belief that had Krupp had more funding she would have been electable. The democrats could have made a "respectable showing" with a candidate that represents the political ideology of Wisconsin first congressional district. They chose someone who spoke like Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid.

What difference does it make if Cullen were to drive a Lexus? It is really pathetic that those who want to force others to buy specific consumer items beleive that restricting the choices of others will somehow majically make GM products better.

What if Toyota/Lexus approached GM and said, we'll buy the Gm facility and we want to produce lexus/camry hybrids lcally and we need to hire 1500 assembly line employees. Would the same bigotry apply?

Riche95:

D1 consistently votes the Democrat candidate in Presidential elections-irrespective of candidate or how left that candidate may lean. Tell me Riche95, who was the last republican to win in WI congressional 1st district?

Obama is not way left of Thomas. Thomas is a single issue "heath care for all candidate." No one knows what if any position he had on economics or immigration or tax policy or fiscal policy or defense or free trade or any other of host of issues that our elected officials confront while in congress.

Dr Thomas is a skilled surgeon, a community leader, devoted to children and Janesvile schools, but wholly un-electable in the broadest sense. He ran his compaigns on an overly simplistic platitude and he voters of D1 saw through him. As a result he was soundly beaten every time. Marge Krupp won 35% of the vote-in a year when congressional approval ratings are 10% and GWB approval ratings are 30% and she STILL had no chance!

Krupp's website is replete with platitudes and democratic talking points. Krupp is arguably a nice person but failed to demonstrate any personal political ideology-this contributed to her landslide defeat. Local dems who continue to run elections like Thomas and Krupp will continue to be beaten by wide margins.

Stan:

Margie Krupp or Jeff Thomas are candidates are much farther left of the majority of D1 constituents-this is the reason why these type of candidates are beaten by 30%.

George Soros himselft could have cut a blank check to Krupp and the outcome would have been the same.

Local politics is just that---local. Krupp and Thomas and others who have opposed Ryan look to government solutions for every ill society has. Complaints of income inequality are nothing new and simplistic complaints do not represent a political ideology. For the left to win in District 1, they need to espouse an ideology more aligned with the majority of constituents. Funding is not the issue-the issue is political ideology and until D1 hard-core dems learn this political lesson the results will be the same.

I disagree. Ryan will not "die on the vine" poltically, he won re-election overwhelmingly and holds much more power politically in Congress than in a non cabinet level, appointed position.

Stan, as you know, nationally, congressional approval ratings are about 10% and yet the vast majority of congress continues to be re-elected, including Ryan. Ryan himself lives and represents a district that overwhelmingly and consistently votes Democrat (Nationally) and yet Ryan wins convincingly. This says one of two things-D1 voters approve of the job Ryan is doing or the democrats cannot find a "strong" candidate (you used the word strong-I find the last few candidates as wholly unelectable and weak politically-as did D1 constituents.) D1 is Ryan's seat as long as he chooses to serve.

What do you mean by leading damage control? What damage? Nancy Pelosi leads congress, not Paul Ryan. The democrats have a strong majority in congress and over the next 2 years you will not see any "Bipartisian legislation." Obama will be able to set his direction and Pelosi and Reid will carry the water for him (or Pelosi and Reid will tell Obama what they want to do) irrespective of the republicans in Congress-the Dems can do whatever they choose as they have the votes to pass legislation. The majority party rules-it is as simple as that.

As for politically appointed positions, they serve at the pleasure of the President-and thus carry the water of the President. While Ryan and Obama may be able to personally get a long, I cannot see a principled, fiscal conservative leading the charge for job killing corporate tax increases, massive increases in social security taxes (without reciprocal increases in benefits), massive increases in capital gains taxes, and higher income taxes on all tax payers (as Obama sunsets the Bush tax cuts). These are the promises of an Obama presidency. What you are proposing is to give Ryan enough rope to hang himself because thats what he would do working for an Obama administration.

On Obama should extend offer to Ryan
