Opening weekend of prep basketball

By Al Fagerli ( Contact )   November 30, 2009

The high school boys and girls basketball seasons began last week and Gary Rau and I had a chance to see the Parker boys, the Craig girls and the Craig boys in their first games.

The Viking boys beat Delevan-Darien with a very nice performance. The team returns four starters from a year ago,a team that won just one game. Ryan Masterson's group a year ago never gave up,no matter what the score was. This year, they have that same attitude, but with experience. While a big 8 title may not be in store, more than one win will be.

The Craig girls were impressive in their demolition of Burlington. I mean how can you nit-pick a 83 to 16 win. Every Cougar played and scored. The Cougars have depth, they have size and experience. A good year seems to be in the cards.

The Cougar boys with new coach Mike Miller reminded me of last year's Parker boys team. Young, not much size, but they play with big hearts. Craig fell behind by over 20 to Edgewood, then fought back and made it respectable. If they keep the same intensity they played with Saturday, they will more than compete with the rest of the league.

We get to see the Parker girls Thursday against Beloit Memorial. Parker will be without Catie OLeary, but return two starters, plus a talented group of underclassmen.

Here we go.
