So long Big 8 football

By Al Fagerli ( Contact )   October 22, 2009

Packing up Wednesday night at Middleton after the Cardinals played Jvl Parker I was asked by a "oldtimer" in the press box if he would see us next year. After I said we would,it dawned on me that we might not as the District plan proposed by the WIAA appears closer to a reality than a proposal. The plan would create districts in varsity football, ending conference play. The sophmore and freshmen would still play conference schools. Craig,Parker and Beloit Memorial would be moved into a district with teams such as Burlington and Waukesha West, while the Madison schools would still play each other,in fact, the proposal has all Madison area schools and Oconomowoc in one district. At first I liked the idea,as it pertains to post-season play. When it comes to long standing relationships and friendships, forget it. On a lighter note, not going to Middleton would mean the end of the best food spread in high school football. Wednesday night, two kinds of chili, subs, soda, water, crackers, cheese, sausage, and more.

Let's hope the "powers that be" see the errors of their ways.
