A Perfect Name

By Al Fagerli ( Contact )   September 16, 2009

In going over the state football schedules each week in high school football I noticed a different name--the SEARANGE conference. The conference is made up of all Minnesota schools except for Ashland. The Minnesota schools are on the so-called "Iron Range" of Minnesota. Towns that were founded during the iron ore heyday. Then, the one Wisconsin schools,Ashland,on the banks of Lake Superior. So that's where they came up with the name.
In looking over the Minnesota schools, great memories came back. Eveleth,Hibbing, and International Falls are hockey hotbeds. The others are around the greater Duluth area. Cloquet (Clo-Kay) is the home of a paper plant and in my days in Duluth, when the wind was blowing the right way,you could smell the plant all the way to Lake Superior. Proctor is just outside of Duluth,as is Hermantown,on the road leading to the "Iron Range". They came up with the perfect name for this conference.
