A high school basketball "Instant Classic"

By Al Fagerli ( Contact )   March 3, 2011

At Mad.Lafollette Wednesday night in a make up game in big 8 play.
The Lancers let a 12 point lead get away in the 4th quarter.
The Vikings sent the game into overtime at 58. With 9.8 seconds left in the overtime,Parker sophomore Dani Fugate sank two free throws, the Vikes led 66-65.
The Lancers came down the court,a missed shot led to a scramble for the loose ball. Unfortunately for Parker...a travel was called and the Lancers had the ball under their basket with one-tenth of a second on the scoreboard.
The officials let both coaches know, that only a tap in would count with so little time left.
Lafollette guard Clair Glode lofted a pass from the baseline and freshman Nicole Newman jumped, stretched her right arm out and tapped it off the glass...game over.

Lancers 67 Parker 66.

For the Lancers to execute that play was astounding. To see the shocked look on the Viking players and their fans was disheartening as well.
The students stormed the court. Parker coach Tom Klawitter kept his players around their bench, let the celebration continue, then led his team over to the Lancer side to congratulate the opponents.

It was what high school sports is all about.

I wish I had a copy of the audio broadcast. I will take responsibility for that. I must have done something wrong in programming the computer to record the game for WCLO.COM.
