Facebook... yes or no?

By Steve Benton ( Contact )   May 20, 2010

I'm hearing both good... and bad things about Facebook these days and I know several people who have dropped it for various reasons. The latest rage appears to come from a report that facebook is selling, or at least sharing user account information. I'm pretty new to Facebook, signing on to the social networking site earlier this year. At this point I'm not experiencing any problems.

Personally, I use it only for networking and keeping in touch with friends and family... period! I do not play all those (my opinion) goofy, time consuming games, I don't take any of the quizzes that let me know how smart or how passionate I am. I'm not allowing strangers to be my "friend" and I find it easy to "manage" my account. I spend about 20 minutes each day dealing with e-mail and about the same managing my Facebook page.

I like Facebook, at this point, but will drop in a "New York minute" (I hope that means fast) if it becomes a problem or a security risk.

Have you succumbed to the Facebook phenomena... been there, done that, dropped it... or aren't interested?

RetiredArmy has a good point. Perhaps you'd want a FB account just to keep an eye on what people are saying about you when you're not in the room.
.
Then again, maybe you don't really want to know.

Freeradical. You are SO WRONG. I don't have a Facebook account and never will, BUT......Information about me was posted by an acquaintance and I did not even know it. It is nothing but a gossip website. If anyone has pictues of me, they can post them and I can't do a thing about it. A good friend of mine had a family picture posted and it was awful. Couldn't do anything about it. All the rest of the relatives saw it that were on Facebook. Doesn't matter if you want to use it or not, it can still hurt you.......

I heard this statistic that 40% of divorces attribute some of the blame on Facebook. Facebook is the international source for Internet cheating.

Sure I have facebook. I guess they sell info much like credit card companies, most businesses with your name and address, and countless other options. Facebook is free. Anything you put onto your account is done by your admission. If people are really that afraid of who they really are, or who "really knows" who they are, do what some do-close the account, or become paranoid and afraid people might actually see through your facade. I don't understand this big uproar about facebook. It's like anything else, you don't like it? Don't use it. Don't want people to see certain things or know specifics? Don't disclose the information!!!!
Pretty simple, right?
It's called social networking, It doesn't have to be an open, soul bearing autobiography. Relax, people! There's REAL issues down in the gulf! Right here at home with jobs! Facebook is moot.
Although their marketing strategies by linking ads for things you like in accordance with things you have on your profile is absolute genius. And the selling of that info seems like a pretty obvious choice to make if I were CEO =)
Just my thoughts!

I enjoy keeping up with folks far away and use it for business and personal -- I also know if I put it on facebook it's there for all to see.

I stopped wasting my time on games and I love to use my rss google reader to look at others status updates, that way I don't have to see the game stuff but I can keep up on "newsy" posts!

I have to admit - I don't talk to my pals on the phone as often, maybe I should change that???

At one point, I had two Facebook accounts; one for family and close friends only, and one for work.
.
I found myself visiting Facebook the same way you visit the refrigerator when you have the munchies. There's nothing good in there, but you keep opening the door to look again anyway. I felt I was spending way too much time looking for something I would never really find.
.
So, I deleted both accounts.
And no one noticed.

I hope you don't mean keeping up with family by posting dumb stuff like " I am off today I am going to watch tv"?

Those posts are a waste of space if you ask me.
Or "I worked today and I am sore"

SO!

I do the quizes sometimes. I don't post most of the results though. The game- I agree NOT!
