The Blizzard of 2011

By Steve Benton ( Contact )   February 2, 2011

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 marks the first day in my 34 year radio career I will not be able to report to work due to the weather. I got up early, because of the blizzard forecasts, so I could dig my way out of my garage and carefully motor to Janesville. It's NOT happening. The wind is so strong my driveway drifted over again before I could finish the job. Fortunately for WCLO, our veteran afternoon news anchor, Beth Wheelock, lives within walking distance from the Gazette building. It's going to be a long day Beth.

CoNgRaTs to Beth - not sure how anyone could make it out in this storm and walking - wow - well done. I think he owes you a year of Starbucks for your effort.

When shoveling, this is definitely a day to paraphrase an old song...

Don't tug on Superman's cape,
Don't (shovel) into the wind
Don't pull the mask off the old lone ranger....

If I timed it right with the gusts, I didn't have to shovel as much as throw the snow up in the air and let it ride 6-10 feet downwind. Definitely had to shovel the entire driveway one direction, though; couldn't just put the snow on the closest side or I'd be wearing it.

:)

Thanks, Steve!
Please note: I have moved, so I no longer live within walking distance. I am, however, the only news team member who lives within Janesville city limits. This is the first time I got the 3am call that both Steve and Stan can't make it in.

The hardest part was shoveling out the four-foot drift in the driveway. I would definitely NOT recommend travel today.
Stay warm!
Beth
