Exercise with a view

By Steve Benton ( Contact )   May 31, 2011

It takes me about an hour to walk three miles. I know that because I'm back into my warm weather exercise groove.

Running is not an option for me, for a number of reasons, so I rely on walking for my main exercise. Fortunately for me, I live near the Rock River and have a two mile route that not only gets my heart moving faster than "desk job" but also affords me a great view. It begins at my house on Portland Ave. in Beloit and goes East to the river on the South side of the Portland Avenue Bridge. From there a walking trail takes me South to the walking "train" bridge which crosses the river to the East side of town. The trail then turns North, goes under the Portland Ave Bridge and along the river past the Rotary River Center, the Turtle Island play area, around the lagoon, and then back to my house along the same trail. The last part of the trip is the hardest. I takes me from 4th Street, up to Bluff Street which is a one block climb, nearly straight up. At least it feels that way.

All that healthy movement and physical joy takes about 40 minutes. I also have a three mile route I take occasionally. It's not the workout of a young Olympian, but it works for me. At 59, I'm burning calories, and that's a good thing.
