Where are my hummingbirds?

By Rose Stricker ( Contact )   April 22, 2008

Has anyone seen any hummingbirds yet this year?

Last year, I started too late to attract more than one hummingbird to my house. Meanwhile, one of my friends e-mailed videos of her personal, backyard hummingbird flock... and I watched them in envy.

::pout::

So, this year I'm ready!

I've been closely monitoring the migration of the ruby-throated hummingbird , and I hung my nectar dispenser earlier this month. Later, I'll pot and hang a couple hummingbird-friendly plants.

Aside from planting the right flowers, do you have any hummingbird secrets for me?

Could be. When I wasn't getting any at our feeder in the front of the house (south), I put another in the back. (north) Last summer we had them flying all around the house.

Hannah and JB: I'm thinking the hummingbirds are flying right past my house because my feeder is on the north side of the house and they don't see it as they're going by from the south. Whaddaya think?

They're here! Saturday morning at 11:30am, I saw my 1st one at our feeder. (Janesville) She didn't stay long, but did drink. Then was on her way.

last week someone called into phyliss garden show about the hummingbirds. She said it was still a bit early but wont be long now.

do you make your own syrup?
i believe 4 parts sugar to 1 part water boil and cool and refrigerate. you can add a little red food coloring. when hot outside change frequiently so it doesnt get yucky.

also be sure to hang feeder by bird loving flowers like- trumpet vine.here is a great site with a listhttp://www.thegardenhelper.com/hummingbird.html
i actually caught one on camera last year just sitting on branch- not moving wings
they also seem to like red flowers.

i think they like nicotina too. i though i had some hummingbirds by the nicotina couple years ago but they were hummingbird moths- neat looking like the bird just no tail. I held a flower in my hand and one buzzed right in there. neat
