Pull Up Your Pants!

By Rose Stricker ( Contact )   July 18, 2008

Finally! Someone is cracking down on the sagging pants fad! You know this fad; it's that “fashion” of wearing pants half-way down one's rear end so that one's underwear is showing.

Maybe I'm just an old fuddy-duddy, but I never understood this. No one I've ever seen wearing their jeans this way has ever looked comfortable. They walk funny. (I once teased a young woman by asking if her dad knew she was wearing his pants. She didn't find that nearly as funny as I did.)

I read somewhere that this fad came around inspired by prison uniforms. Since inmates are not allowed belts, sometimes pants sag. I dunno if this is true or not. Myself, I would not really think it's cool to look like I just walked out of jail. Then again, I have never been accused of looking cool, either.

Be that as it may, do you think police (the regular police, not the fashion police) should have the right to arrest anyone dressed in this matter? They do in Flint, Michigan!

Flint's interim police chief calls this style of pants-wearing “immoral self-expression”. Others are calling his new policy harassment.

What would you call it?

I disagree. I'm not a fan of the sagging pants, but that doesn't mean they should be ticketed. If you start arresting people for "immoral self expression" as the article states, then maybe the women who wear jeans that fit but their underwear peeks out when they bend over will be ticketed, too. Or people with clothes that are too tight. Or someone who doesn't wear a bra.

I just think this is best left to Stacy and Clinton on "What Not To Wear" rather than the police.

yes they should b ticketed, aren't they a hazard to themselves and others if the clothers hang down so low they are walking on the cuffs? could get caught in a door, elevator, etc. I find it very distasteful.

I've been told this fad started in prison. You knew if someone was wearing pants low, they had been in prison...where belts are not allowed. Any truth to this? But yes...they are "thugs" or wanna be's for wearing pants that low and I too can't stand it.

stupid, yes pull up your pants and buy the right size. I also dont know the point of pulling them up all the time like theyll stay there DUH. theyre too BIG. ofcorse maybe only intelligient kids know this simple fact. I think it is stupid and you look like a thug. they should be arrested for indecent exposure.

in my time we did silly fads but atleast are clothers were ON. legwarmers- does serve a purpose though.

wjbecky- very funny- suprised they didnt pull that comment but it is so true!!

I call it finally someone with some sense! I hate it when the low pant wearers have to "hold on" as they walk, the look like they're playing with their junk!
