Radio vs. Television
I ran into a friend and her husband at the grocery store the other evening. She asked me about the weather. To be more accurate, she asked me what Gary Cannalte from Channel 3 TV News had said about the weather when he had called me with that day's forecast. At the mention of Gary's name, her husband's jaw dropped.
“The Gary Cannalte?” he asked incredulously. “Gary Cannalte from TV?!?”
“He calls me every day,” I shrugged.
“Gary Cannalte calls you?!? You talk with the TV guy?”
At that moment, a phrase from this episode of the TV show “Frasier” passed through my mind. Frasier Crane has a radio talk show, but one day, his brother Niles is accidentally included on the radio station's morning show. Frasier's dad, Martin, is so delighted he asks Frasier if he could get a tape of the show. When Frasier asks why, Martin replies, “How often do you get to hear your son on the radio?” Incensed, Frasier fumes, “I'm on the radio every day!”
So, that's what I was thinking while standing there in the grocery store. “I'm on the radio every day! Isn't that impressive?” But, I said nothing. My friend's husband seemed pleased enough to know someone who knows someone on TV. I, therefore, managed to convince myself that it might completely blow his mind to point out that he personally knows someone on the radio.
Yeah. That's it.
Let me throw it out to you, radio listener: Which is more impressive? Local radio or local TV? (Cable, satellite, and syndicated personalities don't count. They're obviously special.)

true about the voice there was a radio station in madison 94.1 it has changed hands a few times. but the man behind the masculine macho voice was about 5'6" scrawney and had a bald mullet.it was the early 90's though, was quite a shocker.
Phyliss at k &W I pictured differently. She is a great women off air at the shop and on air. She has such a great pleasant and patient, very young souding voice on air as well as off air. I am not saying she is very old in person just differnet than the picture in my head.I am not saying she is bad looking either becasue she definatly is a very nice looking lady. Her glasses are my favorite!!! and a great haircut. i pictured a lady with a medium brown hair shoulder length all one length, slight curl to it about 40 yrs old. Why do we come up with these pictures of people in our minds like this that we hear on the radio? could it be their voices remind us of somebody we knew or didnt know well but the voice was similiar?

I would be equally impressed with radio or TV personality. I have my favorites in both mediums. Sometimes it is an even bigger kick to see the radio personality because I do NOT get to SEE them all the time. I like seeing how the physical presence can be so different from what I envisioned from "the voice"!

I'd say that seeing a local radio personality is more a "sight" than a TV personality. I had the opportunity to see a guy you work with from 10-11:30 for the first time outside a local bike shop last Friday. He was dropping words that were just outside of George Carlin's 7 words...right in front of my 4-year-old daughter. It's so interesting to see how the off-air personality compares to the on-air. Stay classy, Janesville.
